Descent as a Rite of Passage with Kairava Shan-Ra

This workshop will be an exploration into the powerful teachings of the myth “Inanna’s Descent” through the medium of story, image, dance, and somatic exercises.

Jung has described descent as a night sea journey that can be experienced as crisis, loss, depression, or struggle. It involves an encounter with the unconscious that has the potential to be transformative and lead to a rebirth or renewal.

As therapists, we are tasked to companion our clients at such times and to accompany them, where we may, in times of chaos, disruption, confusion, and dissolution. We support them to find their way, to strengthen and build their resources, and then to emerge and re-enter the world.

Stories hold maps at such times; images hold keys to an inner wisdom that asks us to learn to see with the eyes of the dark, to wait in a time out of time for the right timing, so that a shift can arise in its own unique way. Ultimately, it is an encounter with Mystery, one that human beings have been navigating throughout time in various ways.
