The story of Rumplestiltskin, among other fairytales, teaches us of the power of naming something accurately. In this time of increasing prevalence of diagnoses, something is clearly being offered to people through this power of naming (relief, validation, permission etc…) but what are the costs? Concretization of being different/other, narcissistic secondary gain of being different/special etc, increased medicalisation of society and subsequent funds given to the pharmaceutical industry, pathologising normalcy… Just to name a few. How do we as Soul Centred Psychotherapists respond to this? When/how do we challenge clients with their self identification as a “***”? What processes can we bring in to explore the phenomenon?
